U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.66%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Friday, as losses in the Financials, Telecoms and Technology sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.66% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.55%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.64%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which rose 1.89% or 2.84 points to trade at 153.14 at the close. Meanwhile, Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 1.31% or 1.20 points to end at 93.00 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 0.69% or 2.69 points to 389.89 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Travelers Companies (NYSE:TRV), which fell 4.25% or 10.31 points to trade at 232.46 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 3.45% or 20.02 points to end at 560.00 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was down 3.15% or 9.55 points to 293.30.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) which rose 27.44% to 11.75, Constellation Energy Corp (NASDAQ:CEG) which was up 25.16% to settle at 305.19 and Delta Air Lines Inc (NYSE:DAL) which gained 8.98% to close at 66.94.

The worst performers were Constellation Brands Inc Class A (NYSE:STZ) which was down 17.09% to 181.81 in late trade, PG&E Corp (NYSE:PCG) which lost 10.81% to settle at 17.17 and ON Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:ON) which was down 7.49% to 53.94 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Wisekey International Holding AG (NASDAQ:WKEY) which rose 53.42% to 10.08, VerifyMe Inc (NASDAQ:VRME) which was up 51.79% to settle at 2.55 and DatChat Inc (NASDAQ:DATS) which gained 50.47% to close at 4.83.

The worst performers were IGM Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:IGMS) which was down 66.29% to 2.09 in late trade, CDT Environmental Technology Investment Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:CDTG) which lost 51.17% to settle at 1.87 and ModivCare Inc (NASDAQ:MODV) which was down 47.48% to 6.56 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2241 to 589 and 44 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2527 fell and 784 advanced, while 110 ended unchanged.

Shares in Constellation Brands Inc Class A (NYSE:STZ) fell to 3-years lows; down 17.09% or 37.47 to 181.81. Shares in Constellation Energy Corp (NASDAQ:CEG) rose to all time highs; gaining 25.16% or 61.35 to 305.19. Shares in Delta Air Lines Inc (NYSE:DAL) rose to all time highs; rising 8.98% or 5.52 to 66.94. Shares in ON Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:ON) fell to 52-week lows; down 7.49% or 4.37 to 53.94. Shares in IGM Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:IGMS) fell to all time lows; falling 66.29% or 4.11 to 2.09. Shares in VerifyMe Inc (NASDAQ:VRME) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 51.79% or 0.87 to 2.55. Shares in CDT Environmental Technology Investment Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:CDTG) fell to all time lows; losing 51.17% or 1.96 to 1.87. Shares in ModivCare Inc (NASDAQ:MODV) fell to 5-year lows; down 47.48% or 5.93 to 6.56.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 8.14% to 19.54.

Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.96% or 25.71 to $2,716.51 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 3.65% or 2.70 to hit $76.62 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 3.60% or 2.77 to trade at $79.69 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.52% to 1.02, while USD/JPY fell 0.20% to 157.75.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.44% at 109.49.
