U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.42%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.42%, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.10%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.88%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 1.90% or 2.48 points to trade at 132.77 at the close. Meanwhile, Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) added 1.79% or 2.57 points to end at 146.23 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 1.58% or 2.33 points to 149.59 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA), which fell 6.21% or 9.28 points to trade at 140.15 at the close. Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) declined 2.42% or 5.50 points to end at 222.11 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was down 1.74% or 0.69 points to 38.92.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which rose 11.65% to 47.53, HCA Holdings Inc (NYSE:HCA) which was up 3.80% to settle at 308.21 and First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR) which gained 3.38% to close at 197.73.

The worst performers were Palantir Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:PLTR) which was down 7.81% to 69.99 in late trade, NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which lost 6.21% to settle at 140.15 and Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ:SMCI) which was down 5.68% to 34.38 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were DatChat Inc (NASDAQ:DATS) which rose 355.61% to 8.93, Hoth Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:HOTH) which was up 178.18% to settle at 2.28 and DarioHealth Corp (NASDAQ:DRIO) which gained 84.96% to close at 1.53.

The worst performers were DIH Holding US Inc (NASDAQ:DHAI) which was down 38.70% to 1.79 in late trade, CISO Global Inc (NASDAQ:CISO) which lost 37.04% to settle at 1.70 and ACELYRIN Inc (NASDAQ:SLRN) which was down 36.96% to 2.20 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1832 to 976 and 64 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2187 fell and 1100 advanced, while 134 ended unchanged.

Shares in DatChat Inc (NASDAQ:DATS) rose to 52-week highs; rising 355.61% or 6.97 to 8.93. Shares in Hoth Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:HOTH) rose to 52-week highs; rising 178.18% or 1.46 to 2.28. Shares in ACELYRIN Inc (NASDAQ:SLRN) fell to all time lows; down 36.96% or 1.29 to 2.20.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 11.10% to 17.82.

Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.66% or 17.57 to $2,664.97 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.98% or 0.72 to hit $74.28 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 1.00% or 0.76 to trade at $77.06 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.45% to 1.03, while USD/JPY rose 0.24% to 157.98.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.37% at 108.50.
