U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.61%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Telecoms, Industrials and Financials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.61%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.39%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.33%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which rose 1.78% or 2.56 points to trade at 146.41 at the close. Meanwhile, Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) added 1.36% or 0.85 points to end at 63.40 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 1.01% or 0.78 points to 77.98 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH), which fell 2.60% or 12.98 points to trade at 485.52 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 1.99% or 11.65 points to end at 574.68 and Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) was down 1.75% or 6.24 points to 350.99.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) which rose 4.67% to 26.43, Fox Corp Class A (NASDAQ:FOXA) which was up 4.27% to settle at 49.07 and Fox Corp Class B (NASDAQ:FOX) which gained 4.08% to close at 46.47.

The worst performers were Humana Inc (NYSE:HUM) which was down 10.20% to 233.89 in late trade, Amentum Holdings LLC (NYSE:AMTM) which lost 9.59% to settle at 21.51 and CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) which was down 5.49% to 44.04 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were 22nd Century Group Inc (NASDAQ:XXII) which rose 10,304.76% to 4.37, Nukkleus Inc (NASDAQ:NUKK) which was up 754.68% to settle at 11.88 and Portage Biotech Inc (NASDAQ:PRTG) which gained 182.50% to close at 9.04.

The worst performers were Vaccinex Inc (NASDAQ:VCNX) which was down 62.10% to 1.41 in late trade, Tenaya Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:TNYA) which lost 51.04% to settle at 1.41 and Insight Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:AMOD) which was down 45.45% to 3.00 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2090 to 736 and 52 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2094 fell and 1229 advanced, while 99 ended unchanged.

Shares in Humana Inc (NYSE:HUM) fell to 3-years lows; losing 10.20% or 26.57 to 233.89. Shares in Fox Corp Class A (NASDAQ:FOXA) rose to all time highs; gaining 4.27% or 2.01 to 49.07. Shares in Fox Corp Class B (NASDAQ:FOX) rose to all time highs; up 4.08% or 1.82 to 46.47. Shares in CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) fell to 5-year lows; down 5.49% or 2.56 to 44.04. Shares in 22nd Century Group Inc (NASDAQ:XXII) rose to 3-years lows; rising 10,304.76% or 4.33 to 4.37. Shares in Vaccinex Inc (NASDAQ:VCNX) fell to all time lows; down 62.10% or 2.31 to 1.41. Shares in Tenaya Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:TNYA) fell to all time lows; falling 51.04% or 1.47 to 1.41. Shares in Insight Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:AMOD) fell to all time lows; falling 45.45% or 2.50 to 3.00.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 8.03% to 15.87.

Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.30% or 7.99 to $2,662.01 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 1.24% or 0.88 to hit $69.83 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.78% or 0.58 to trade at $73.33 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.19% to 1.05, while USD/JPY fell 0.40% to 153.54.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.10% at 106.66.
